Welcome To My Lab!

This is a resource lab which provides e-learning tools applied to language learning and CALL materials. Here teaching and learning are both creative experiences involving the use of technologies.

Attending the online course called CALL, GSL520/GED565: Computer-Assisted Language Learning Online, I was able to develop this blog as a project about integrating technology in the language classroom, which I first shared with my mates from Saint Michael's College, http://www.smcvt.edu/, in Vermont, USA.

I firmly believe that foreign language teachers must provide EXTENSIVE PRACTICE to allow students to develop their four skills and to increase retention throughout different methods and tools. In this context, technology gives us the chance to facilitate learning and enhance our students' excitement.

Although the lab predominantly focuses on the English language, I consider appropriate to include tips on the Italian and Spanish language.

Polls Boutique: an Audio Poll

In my previous post I have introduced polls as a potential means of increasing students’ engagement for any kind of language activity with relative examples I created. Polls Boutique has a plus-factor as it gives users the opportunity to add photos, videos, and audio in polls. As all the online tools, teachers need to know how to use it effectively as a supplement for their classroom language activities providing additional practice in various learning contexts.
The example below shows one of the audio polls I devised. Unfortunately, the audio has not been embedded and you need to go to the website page to listen to the recording taken from Learning Spanish Like Crazy.

As you can imagine, there are many ways to stimulate students through the use of polls. Based on the vocabulary taught, I came up with the idea of asking students what is the English word for the Spanish “lancha”. It is very simple, but it is a very powerful way to revise the items of the lessons. Pupils pay attention to the script while having fun.

TIPS:

  • ask your students to choose at least three items of the vocabulary dealt with in class
  • invite them to record their poll
  • instruct them on how to create a poll adding their audio
